When you are planning a corporate conference, a charity AGM, or a team training day in Birmingham city centre, location and facilities are usually the first things on your checklist. You need fast transport links, reliable AV tech, and a space that keeps your delegates focused.
But in today’s business world, there is a massive shift happening. Organisations are actively looking to reduce their carbon footprint and ensure their corporate spending aligns with ethical values.
The trouble is, finding a truly sustainable event venue in the concrete heart of a major city is surprisingly difficult. Many venues talk a good game about “going green” by swapping plastic straws for paper ones, but at The Priory Rooms, sustainability isn’t a marketing trend we just bolted on—it’s baked into the very foundations of who we are.
Guided by our historic Quaker values of stewardship, integrity, and simplicity, we are incredibly proud to be one of the very few event centres in Birmingham city centre that operates with the planet—and the local community—at the heart of every decision.
Here is how hosting your next event at 40 Bull Street actively contributes to environmental and social wellbeing:
We don’t just turn the lights down to save energy. The Priory Rooms runs on 100% renewable electricity. To make sure we aren’t wasting a single kilowatt, we use an advanced Building Management System to carefully optimise our heating and cooling across all nine of our meeting spaces, dramatically cutting down our energy consumption. Furthermore, we were among the very first locations in Birmingham city centre to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points, helping your delegates travel cleaner.
Every event involves food and resources, but we work tirelessly to ensure ours don’t end up in a landfill.
Zero Food Waste to Landfill: Any leftover, surplus food from your event lunches is packaged up and donated directly to the local homeless charity Let’s Feed Brum. Whatever food waste is left over is sent off to be converted into clean, green energy.
Rainwater Harvesting: Yes, even our plumbing is eco-friendly. We collect and store rainwater right here on-site, which we use to flush our toilets and keep our tranquil courtyard garden looking beautiful.
We know that a great lunch keeps delegates happy, but heavy food miles don’t make the planet happy. We partner closely with local suppliers to dramatically cut down our food miles and source local, fresh produce wherever possible. Plus, your tea and coffee breaks are strictly Fairtrade—ensuring the farmers who grow your mid-morning pick-me-up are paid ethically and treated fairly.
Our commitment to the environment goes beyond our building walls. We have officially partnered with the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust. By hosting your meeting or conference with us, you are directly supporting local urban conservation efforts, helping to restore nature and boost biodiversity right here in the West Midlands.
True sustainability includes social sustainability. Because we are a not-for-profit venue, a significant portion of our trading profits are donated back to the Central England Quakers to fund vital community projects, peace initiatives, and local charity work. When you book a room package with us, your budget doesn’t line the pockets of corporate shareholders; it directly enters the local social economy.
Did You Know? If your organisation needs to report on its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) impact, booking at The Priory Rooms gives you concrete, measurable data to showcase your commitment to ethical procurement.
Being green doesn’t mean sacrificing modern comforts. Located just minutes away from Birmingham New Street, Snow Hill, and Moor Street stations, we offer seamless public transport access, fully step-free accessibility, top-tier AV facilities, and a uniquely peaceful courtyard setting that feels miles away from the city bustle.
Next time you host an event, don’t just check the boxes for capacity and catering—make a choice that makes a difference.
