Proud to be Sustainable: The Priory Rooms Awarded Green Meetings Silver Certification

At The Priory Rooms Meeting & Conference Centre, sustainability has never been a buzzword or a check-box exercise. As a Quaker-owned, not-for-profit venue operating in the heart of Birmingham city centre, operating ethically and responsibly is built directly into our heritage.

That is why we are thrilled to announce that our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and social value has been officially recognised: The Priory Rooms has been awarded the Green Meetings Silver Certification!

This accreditation from Green Tourism offers independent, expert verification that our operations meet rigorous, industry-recognised standards for sustainability.

What is the Green Meetings Certification?

The Green Meetings certification is a benchmark developed specifically for the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector by Green Tourism—the UK’s leading accreditation body for sustainable tourism and events.

Designed to give corporate event organizers and procurement teams complete confidence, the certification uses a detailed assessment framework based on three core pillars: People, Places, and Planet.

How We Achieved Our Silver Award: The Criteria

To earn Silver certification, venues undergo a rigorous, evidence-based audit verified by expert sustainability assessors. Criteria map directly onto the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring every measure contributes meaningfully to global progress.

Here is a look at the key operational areas assessed for our Silver rating:

1. Environmental Stewardship & Carbon Reduction (Planet)

  • Zero Waste to Landfill: Working alongside waste management partners to prioritise recycling, composting, and energy recovery.

  • Energy & Water Efficiency: Implementing energy-efficient lighting, smart temperature controls, and water-saving measures throughout our central Birmingham facility.

  • Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: Removing single-use plastics across event catering, break-out areas, and meeting rooms.

2. Ethical Sourcing & Local Communities (People)

  • Fairtrade & Local Catering: Providing delegates with 100% Fairtrade tea and coffee, alongside catering sourced from regional West Midlands suppliers to keep food miles low.

  • Not-For-Profit Reinvestment: Demonstrating true social value by reinvesting surplus booking revenue straight back into local community projects, peace initiatives, and historic building preservation.

3. Delegate Wellbeing & Sustainable Travel (Places)

  • Commuter-Friendly Location: Situated minutes from Birmingham New Street, Snow Hill, Moor Street stations, and West Midlands Metro stops—making it easy for delegates to travel by public transport.

  • Biophilic Design & Wellbeing: Offering bright spaces with natural daylight and direct access to a tranquil courtyard garden, creating healthier, low-stress environments for training days and strategy meetings.

What This Means for Event Organisers and Corporate Buyers

As companies face stricter internal ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) mandates and Scope 3 emissions targets, event planners need transparent proof when selecting venue partners.

When you host your conference, board meeting, or workshop at The Priory Rooms, our Green Meetings Silver award gives you:

  1. Third-Party Verification: Independent assurance that your venue choice actively supports environmental and social goals.

  2. Effortless ESG Compliance: Clear sustainability credentials to include in your post-event reporting, CSR summaries, and stakeholder updates.

  3. Guaranteed Social Impact: Confidence that your budget supports a social enterprise dedicated to making a positive difference in Birmingham.

Looking Ahead: The Journey Continues

Achieving Green Meetings Silver is a milestone we are immensely proud of, but our sustainability journey does not stop here. We are continually working through our Green Meetings Action Plan—exploring new ways to further reduce our carbon footprint, enhance biodiversity in our outdoor spaces, and support ethical procurement.

Thank you to all our clients, delegates, and staff whose support makes achievements like this possible!
